Caffeine, measured — not guessed

Most caffeine pages stop at a single number. TrackCaffeine goes further: for every one of our 87 drinks we publish the exact milligrams, the strength per 100 ml, the equivalent in cups of coffee, and — uniquely — how much caffeine is left in your body after 1, 3, 6 and 12 hours. Those decay figures come from the same first-order pharmacokinetic model used in our CoffeeLog app, where caffeine halves roughly every 5.7 hours.

That second layer matters because the dose on the label is not the dose in your blood at bedtime. A 160 mg energy drink still leaves about 77 mg working six hours later. A large brewed coffee at 2 pm can keep more than 100 mg circulating near midnight. Our half-life calculator and last-cup-before-bed tool turn that into a clear answer: how much is in you now, and the latest moment you can have one more cup without wrecking your sleep.

Everything is sourced from public manufacturer data and USDA FoodData Central, published openly as a downloadable dataset, and labelled as estimates rather than medical figures. Start with a drink, run the numbers, then let CoffeeLog track it automatically.

Frequently asked questions

How much caffeine is in a cup of coffee?

A standard 240 ml (8 fl oz) cup of brewed drip coffee has about 96 mg of caffeine. Espresso is 63 mg per shot, and a Grande brewed coffee from a major chain can reach 310 mg.

How long does caffeine stay in your system?

Caffeine has an average half-life of about 5.7 hours, so roughly half is gone after ~6 hours and about a quarter remains after 12 hours. Individual rates vary with genetics, smoking and pregnancy.

How much caffeine is safe per day?

The FDA cites up to 400 mg per day as not generally associated with negative effects for healthy adults — about four cups of coffee. Pregnant people are usually advised to stay under about 200 mg.

Which drink has the most caffeine?

Per serving, strong pre-workouts and high-stimulant energy drinks like Bang and Reign top the list at around 300 mg. Among everyday drinks, a large chain brewed coffee can exceed 300 mg.

Does tea have less caffeine than coffee?

Yes. Black tea has about 47 mg per 240 ml and green tea about 28 mg, versus roughly 96 mg for the same cup of brewed coffee. Matcha sits higher at about 70 mg.

When should I stop drinking caffeine before bed?

To stay under the ~100 mg many people notice at bedtime, finish caffeine several hours before sleep — the exact time depends on the dose. The last-cup calculator works it out for you.
